  • Be Inspired Again!

    Social distancing takes a toll on every one, but body artists have a burden that most others don’t. We have no canvas for our creative outlet. Sure, we can practice on paper or practice boards, and we can keep our skills sharp by working on henna styled crafts. It just doesn’t give inspiration like connecting with another human and creating something special just for them. Without contact we struggle to be inspired.

    Today I’m going to share some ideas I’ve had, and some I’ve gleaned from friends, to keep creativity fresh this spring.

    Let Go of Making and Just See

    Just relax and look at the beautiful things that already exist in the world around you. Some of the photos in the gallery below are art and nature found on walks in my city. Others are from a trip to the the botanical conservatory. Before the garden was closed, my dear friend and henna-partner Rachel took me there to walk and sketch. The photos and sketches from that day still help me to be inspired.

    Let Someone Else Give You a Spark

    While it may be counter productive to wander through the depths of instagram looking at hundreds of intimidatingly perfect henna designs, there are positive ways to to get a little push from other artists.

    Leah Riddell’s “February Posh” is an example. This is a month of practice prompts that get you to stretch your abilities. If you’re unfamiliar, check out the #februaryposh on Instagram or FaceBook. Essentially its “Inktober” for henna!

    “Elementals: An Encyclopedia of Henna Patterns” is another. This is a recently released design book by Nev Levin of Remarkable Blackbird that is loaded with myriad design elements ranging from the traditional to the modern, from delicate to bold, and from tiny to expansive fills. This book is perfect for inspiration because it doesn’t do all the work for you. It leaves you the space to be inspired by the unique elements and create your own flow and composition.     Stretch New Creative Muscles

    This may be a great time to pick up a new art or craft! Exercising your artistic urges in a new way can give you a little space from your regular medium allowing fresh perspective. It can also really take the pressure off to be able to express yourself in a way that has no tie to career or income. You can even think of it as meditation in a way- a calming of this particular corner of the mind. Even something as simple as adult coloring books, melt and pour soap, or tie dye might be shockingly helpful!

    Some of the opportunities for learning a new creative outlet might out of the question right now such as community classes or clubs, but there are other opportunities to learn! Many libraries are offering online programming that includes arts and crafts. Online learning venues such as Bluprint and The Great Courses are offering free trials. Of course there’s always YouTube. Vetting the value of videos on a topic you’re not familiar with can be difficult. I’ve found that business that sell supplies for a craft tend to have reliable YouTube channels with the most helpful videos. When I was first learning to spin yarn, for example, The Woolery was an entry level supplier. Their videos were very helpful. Speaking of spinning, check out a few photos of my fun with dyeing and spinning wool!

    New Tools!

    My friends will tell you I’m a penny pincher. I have a tendency to work way harder than I have to in order to use cheap or hand-me-down tools. I will never forget my first lesson in how much of a mistake that can be. When I was just starting college one of the things on my supply list for art 102 (2D intro) was a specific $25 #4 round paintbrush. And that’s in mid-90s dollars! My gut said “WTF!?” but the moment I used that brush I could tell why it was worth it. That brush also lasted me until I was well over 30 and all the paint had crumbled off the handle.

    As Henna artists, we are quite lucky to have access to excellent tools that are still quite affordable. It might sting the pocket a little to throw down for high end essential oils, but I bet you’ve never spent more than $15 for 100 g of the sexiest henna you ever touched! We sure don’t have to consider painful investments like a kiln or blowtorch! Shown in the video is my latest batch of henna, Saraswati 2020, that is the stringiest thing I’ve had come though my shop in years. It feels so good! Its a real practice motivator for me!

    It’s Okay Not to Make Anything

    After all this, I still think it’s very important to say that it’s okay not to be productive. It’s okay not to be artistic or create. It’s okay to not be inspired. You can do a puzzle, you can binge Netflix, you can soak in the bath, you can sleep in. Make your house shine like only pandemic anxiety and improvised cleaning supplies can. Or watch the cat hair tumbleweeds roll by. It’s okay to feel whatever it is that you’re feeling right now. We all have different ways to cope and express and emote. Give yourself space to do it your way.

  • Safety Concerns with Lavender EO

    Why Lavender?

    Lavender is the industry standard for mildness when it comes to essential oils in a henna paste mix. We use it during pregnancy, for nursing mothers, for those undergoing cancer treatments, for people with sensitive skin, and really for clients with any other health conditions at all! People often ask why that is. Is it because cajeput is dangerous during pregnancy for example? Or does geranium interact badly with cancer medicines? No, none of that. The answer is simply that lavender essential oils has had the most high quality, peer reviewed, and repeatedly verified research. Our other oils might be just as safe, but because of all that research we KNOW that for most people lavender is the most safe. Of course specific conditions and allergies may not make lavender the best choice for every single person! This is why no matter how mild or safe your recipe, its always important to make sure your ingredients list is available to clients so they can evaluate their own personal needs in that regard.

    What About Camphor?

    If you know that camphor at certain levels of exposure can be harmful, you may be shocked to realize that it is a chemical constituent of lavender essential oil. Here are some facts about camphor that you may find surprising. Camphor is actually considered safe for topical applications by many respectable health sources including webMD even thought in high concentrations it can irritate the skin, and taken orally it is toxic. Obviously we never encounter a situation where henna should be used internally! And in a lavender oil, the exposure is super tiny, and further diluted in our paste. Some people are under the impression that the right amount of camphor in lavender oil is zero, but they are mistaken. There will always be a tiny fraction of camphor in lavender no matter what. The ISO limits of camphor in lavender oil to be a minimum of .5% and a max of 1.5%. Our industry standard is less than 1% especially in cases of medical fragility. For your convenience Henna Muse always includes camphor levels in descriptions of all lavender oil varieties we offer.

    Doesn’t Lavender Oil Cause Boys to Grow Excess Breast Tissue?

    Best I can tell, maybe three of them? I’m being facetious here, but still, don’t be alarmed. Here’s the story on that. In 2007 there was a study published showing that this was possible. This study was a small case study involving just three boys, and the thing they shared in common was regular use of products containing lavender essential oil. This is obviously not a reasonable sample size, and even so shows no correlation. Just a common variable. All three boys did quickly return to normal after stopping regular use of the lavender products. In 2018 there was another publications about chemical tests in laboratories that showed that some chemical constituents in lavender and other essential oils can in fact mimic estrogen. These tests were in vitro and do not show us the workings of the body as a whole or any information about dosing. Yes it does appear that regular and probably concentrated use of lavender essential oil may indeed effect some young boys, but the condition appears quite rare, and reversible based on the very limited research available at this time.

    Irritation and Oxidation

    The last health concern involving lavender essential oil has to do with possible skin irritation. This is an especially important point because we are often using lavender in cases where we know the client is particularly sensitive and we certainly don’t want actively cause irritation! Over time lavender will oxidize which alters its chemical make up. When this happens lavender in particular can cause irritation to the skin. On top of that, lavender essential oil has a particularly short shelf life compared to other essential oils. This is a pretty easy problem to avoid though if you take the following steps.

    • Trust that your supplier is only shipping you fresh supplies.
    • Only order what you can use in 6 months.
    • Keep the bottle closed as much as possible.
    • Store oils in dark glass and keep them in a dark place.
    • If your lavender oil goes past date, set it aside for non skin purposes such as air cleaning products or use in a diffuser. Do not continue to use it in henna paste or other uses that would be applied to skin.

    Lavender Essential Oil is obtained by distillation from the flower spikes of certain species of lavender. Like all essential oils, it is not a pure compound but is a complex mixture of phytochemicals, in this case including high percentages of linalool and linalyl acetate. Linalool happens to be a monoterpene alcohol great for improving henna stains.

    Spotting Imposters

    There are far more variations of fake lavender essential oil than the real thing! Two of the most common imposters are the least useful to us. Synthetic lavender fragrance oil is often simply called “Lavender scent,” or “Lavender Oil.” It may smell very much like you would expect lavender essential oil to smell, but the chemical constituents are not the same so it will not have the same medicinal effects or impact henna stain. Diluted Lavender essential oil is often marketed for aroma therapy or massage oil. In this case 90% or even more of the contents of the bottle will actually be a carrier oil such as almond oil or grape seed oil. Obviously this will decrease the dose and effectiveness in therapeutic use, and in a henna recipe those carrier oils can actually work to block the skin from absorbing dye! Other Lavender essential oil imposters may be a little harder to spot. They come from plants that are cousins of the lavender plant. True lavender has the latin name Lavandula angustifolia. Despite what you may have read elsewhere, the latin name Lavandula officinalis is also referring to true lavender. Its just outdated nomenclature. Many varieties casually called “lavender” will have a latin name that starts “lavandula,” but the second part is something else. We only want to use angustifolia or officinalis. Even within this specific variety there is still a surprising amount of choice and variation! We will explore that more later.

    Common Use vs Henna Artist Use

    As henna artists our use of lavender essential oil is unusual and specific. We shop for different qualities than the average consumer. Most people are looking for high levels of chemical constituents that have been known to reduce inflammation, pain, and to kill bacteria. Of the two largest components of essential oil, Linalyl acetate, does most of that work. We are looking for higher levels of the other one: linalool. More specifically we need it in lavender essential oil varieties that are unusually low in in camphor, which can be harmful in the amounts we use in our paste. 

    Long Standing Conventions

    As time goes on we take for granted the way of thing because “that’s just what we do.” You’ll hear this about a lot of traditional henna recipes, and unfortunately even with the addition of dangerous black chemicals! Possibly even more surprising is that we do this with modern recipes too! About 15-20 years there was a lot of modern experimentation with henna paste recipes. We learned a lot about paste preservation, which sugars help change textures and avoid cracking, and most relevant here, what essential oils impact stain the most and are safe to use. You can see most of the knowledge in this vein that has become common convention in the henna community. Specific to lavender oil, 40/42 has been dismissed as “adulterated,” which is not necessarily the case as I will explain in an upcoming post. Fine French lavender has been dismissed as sweet but wimpy in regards to ‘terping’ power. High Altitude Bulgarian lavender has been declared the winner for henna artistry. 

    A Fresh Look

    Page from Essential Oil Text BookI was inspired to do some new experimentation when I noticed something in one of my most trusted resources on Essential oils, Essential Oil Safety by Tisserand and Young. We have been operating under the assumption that French lavender was inferior for our needs to Bulgarian lavender, and also that high altitude lavender is much better suited to our uses than other crops. Taking a quick look at the list of chemical constituents of lavenders from different regions, shows French lavender to be substantially higher in linalool, which is the main monoterpen responsible for improving color in this particular oil! Most varieties contain other traces of monoterpens such as terpineol or cineole but these are not even nearly enough to make up for the difference. Hmmmm. A little more research lead me to understand that most French lavender is in fact high altitude lavender. It seemed to me that maybe we have been missing an important option in lavender selection for years!

    Let the Testing Begin 

    Obviously we need an experiment to check this out. I mixed four 1.5 teaspoons batches of Henna Muse Organic henna powder with lemon juice, and 1 ml each of a different variety of lavender. I used Fine French Lavender, 40/42 Lavender, Bulgarian Lavender, and Hungarian Lavender. Each was applied to the skin of my palm 24 hours after mixing, left to dry, then taped, and left on the skin for 8 hours.

    Looking closely at the photos below you can see very cleary that the French lavender is certainly not performing less than our favorite Bulgarian! In fact, I’m not sure it translates well in the photo but the French lavender is actually the darkest, followed by Hungarian, then Bulgarian, with the 40/42 showing the lightest color.

    It might be easier to see in this shot of the fade. The light is poor quality but you can see that the French and Hungarian stand out here, with the 40/42 all but gone. This is a 15 day photo. Obviously no care was taken to preserve the stain. It was getting tiresome to explain!

    A Little More Research

    Inspired by science that flies in the face of my habits, I decided to take the opportunity to do some more research. And its absolutely maddening! The common names for Lavandula Officinalis (remember that’s our favorite!) include English Lavender, French Lavender, Lavender, and will even occasionally be called Greek Lavender. BUT Lavandula stoechas, which is not high enough in monoterpen alcohols for our use,  has common names that include Spanish Lavender, topped lavender, and… wait for it… FRENCH lavender. Seriously. And that’s not all. For example France exports more lavender than they produce. All labeled French. But some of it must be coming from elsewhere! The use of the word “high altitude” is not regulated making it very difficult to know what a manufacturer or retailer actually has unless they tell you something specific about how and where it was grown. In fact lavender grown in France is almost all “high altitude” just as much so as Bulgarian. We should be quite familiar with the notion that like wine or henna, counting on a growing location is not enough to really know what to expect every harvest. Temperatures and rainfall can greatly impact a crop. Maybe last year Bulgarian lavender was best and next year French will be. Just like one year we love our Sojat henna and the next year its just not stringy enough. No wonder we’re confused. No wonder we blindly stick with a thing when it works. But I think we can do better!

    Conclusion

    What I’ve decided after all this testing and thinking and reading is that I am going to be much more willing to branch out and try new lavender sources. I’m going to test each one, and not assume that the region tells me enough. From now on I’m going to test samples of a few possibilities and show them to my customers so they can see exactly what to expect!

  • Does Sugar Lessen Henna Stains?

    I saw some conversations on the Henna Hub indicating that people found that adding sugar to their paste was making their stains lighter. Mark Samwella from Jamaica even did some carefully documented testing and showed side by side stains where the sugar mixes were visibly less than those without. I was stunned! I know with certainty that if I don’t add sugar here in the US Midwest that the henna will crumble and fall off before much dye can be absorbed. So what’s going on here? So I decided to do some of my own testing on how sugar impacts henna stain.

    Procedure:

    I put one tablespoon of Organic Rajasthani Henna powder in each of 8 small cups. To that I added enough lemon juice to moisten and 1 ml cajeput essential oil.

    I covered 4 of the cups with plastic wrap to let them dye release.

    To the other four I added the following: no sugar, 1/2 teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon sugar, 2 teaspoon sugar. Then I thinned to a working consistency with lemon juice, and covered with plastic wrap.

    After 12 hours at room temperature I added sugar to the 4 cups in the following way. The first one I added as much sugar as it would take to thin the paste to working consistency. To the rest 1/2 teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon sugar, 2 teaspoons sugar.

    I applied all 8 mixes in generous dabs on my left calf, and again on my right calf, taping them after they dried.

    Results:

    The non sugared batch fell off within 40 minutes, as I expected. I was very surprised to find that after the color developed that patch still caught up to the others even with such little exposure! The tapped tests look pretty much the same except for the batches that are way over sugared, which are significantly lighter. I was surprised to see that my standard method of adding sugar to consistency was a little bit lighter, but in my dry, climate controlled kitchen, it did take nearly 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar, which is a LOT and nearly as much as the purposely over sugared 2 teaspoon batches. I saw virtually no difference between adding sugar at the initial mix vs. after dye release. I didn’t manage to get photo of the fade, but after days of wear and scrubbing the 2 teaspoon dots faded first, followed by the no sugar dots, then the rest. So even though the sugarless sample got as dark with less exposure it it did not last as long.

    Day four: To my eye the darkest batches here are the 1/2 and 1 tablespoon, added after dye release batches.

    Conclusion:

    Yes I was surprised! But I will also keep using sugar. It does seem that TOO MUCH sugar impacts henna stain in a negative way. It makes sense though really. At that point your actually diluting the the amount of dye in the paste. I will probably reduce my maximum sugar addition from 6 tablespoons of sugar per 100 grams of paste to 4 before thinning with water, but on the whole I won’t change my method, or leave the sugar out all together.

    I was very surprised that the short exposure time of the non-sugar batch impacted the color so little! However it did greatly reduce longevity. This gives me confidence that most people will experience good stain even when they don’t have good after care. Duration of paste exposure is bound to be my next test!

    While Marc in Jamaica may have a very different environment from mine, his best practices are bound to be different. Its clear that his testing showed his method works for him. My testing showed my method works for me. I do believe that OVER sugaring to the degree of being non-workable anyway is probably the culprit where sugar causes an obviously poor stain. In my test they were clearly the only obvious outliers. My typical philosophy on henna methods is that within the margins of safe practice, every artists should do what works for them. And I stand by that.

  • About Mixing Henna

    As I try to brainstorm new content for this website, I’ve started thinking about getting back to basics. The most basic thing I can think of is mixing henna paste, and looking back at my previous posts I’ve spend some time going into great detail about henna chemistry, and special techniques in mixing henna, but what I haven’t done is post a very simple basic recipe.  So here it is! This is the simple beginner’s recipe that I include in my henna kits.

    Mixing Henna Paste

    This is the most basic recipe for mixing paste. You may want to make changes based on your preferences or your local climate, but this is a great place to start.

    Instructions

    Mixing

    1. Mix lemon juice into henna powder and sugar until it is the consistency of stiff mashed potatoes.
    2. Add essential oil and adjust the consistency of the paste to about that of pancake batter by adding more lemon juice.
    3. Recover and let stand 5 – 24 hours until it’s ready. The cooler the temperature, the longer it will need to stand. You can tell when it’s ready by putting a dot of paste on the heal of your palm. Let the paste dry, and rinse it off. If there is a bright orange stain, your paste is ready. This is called dye release.

    Filling applicators

    Spoon the paste into the included pastry bag. Snip the pointy end with scissors. Gently squeeze paste into the applicators. Only fill them about 2/3 of the way and use the remaining plastic to fold into a triangle and roll down. Use a tab of tape to hold it closed.

    Application

    Apply to clean skin. Allow the paste to dry for 30 minutes before touching it or covering with clothing. Leave dry paste on for an additional 4-8 hours.

    After care

    When the paste is removed the design will be pale orange. Allow 1-3 days for the color to deepen. Avoid water as much as possible in these first days. Use lotion or lip balm to keep skin moisturized and to seal it away from exposure to water before bathing.

    Day 2

    Daily henna practice doesn’t have to be horribly time consuming every day! On Wednesdays I coach 5-9 year olds roller derby. I also watch my grandson every weekday evening. Today I didn’t exactly have a lot of spare time. I thought that if I built from yesterday’s practice I would make the most of the little time I had.

    For today’s practice I took one of the brainstormed ideas from yesterday, developed it further, executed it better, and tried out some complimentary finger tips ideas.

    Practice is important in every field. I think its especially important for me in winter when I don’t get nearly as much paid work. I really don’t take special time out for daily henna practice nearly enough, and I find that when I do, I practice the same sort of designs and elements that I already use a lot. I’ve decided to challenge myself to practice something new and useful every business day at least until spring. My challenges will be posted here every day for anyone who wants to follow along. I’d love to see your work if you do!

    January 2, Day 1

    Practice isn’t all drills and repetition. Sometimes practice is about tackling a problem from a new angle. Brainstorm some simple strips that do NOT contain paisleys or flowers.

    Here are my strips. They are not perfectly executed. They are not groundbreaking. They are not really special at all. But doodling them did stretch my brain a bit!

  • The Chemistry of Henna for Body Art

    The Chemistry of Henna

    Maybe you’re a person who loves the deeper details of how things work, or maybe you’re an artist who cowers from memories of the trauma of high school chemistry class. Either way, understanding the chemistry of henna can help you make better paste, make use of better aftercare, and even help clients or customers troubleshoot a henna design that didn’t darken as it should have. This exploration of the chemistry of henna will be broken into manageable pieces. First we will discuss all the ingredients necessary to good henna paste and what they do, one at a time. Then we will focus on the dye molecule and what is happening to it through the process of dye release, application, and paste demise. Last we will look at how the dye binds to skin, oxidation, and the life span of the henna design. This really is fairly simple material when taken one step at a time.

    Part One: Making Paste

    Henna paste, at its bare minimum requires powdered henna leaves, and a liquid. To improve the texture and flexibility of paste we also add a form of sugar. To improve the potency of paste and give a darker color we also use a skin safe solvent, in the form of a monoterpene alcohol.

    Henna powder-

    Henna is a bit like wine in that depending on where its grown, the weather, and other factors in processing and harvesting, each new batch will have subtle differences. Sometimes there is more or less dye present. Typically the leaves contain between 1-3% dye. Obviously higher dye content is appreciated among henna artists. Sometimes there will be an extra abundance of long chain sugars created in the plant which is what creates a “stringy” henna paste. Other times a harvest will have a particularly high concentration of calcium oxalate. This is naturally created in the leaves of henna and many other plants. It also happens to be the most common constituent of kidney stones. In our henna these crystals will make paste sound gritty when stirred in a class bowl and can sometimes cause clogging and unexpected texture changes. While these variables are the results of the unpredictability of weather and nature, there are others to watch for that are the result of manufacturing practices. Henna should be finely ground and well sifted. If not the texture of the paste will clog cones or bottles and be overall, very hard to work with. Henna should be reasonably fresh. Sealed in air and moisture tight packaging, away from heat and sunlight, henna will keep for a few years. It would be reasonable to be suspicious of henna older than that. Henna in store bought kits rarely contains harvest or use by dates making them unreliable. Henna stored in bulk bins will go stale and lose its ability to stain much quicker than properly stored henna. Henna intended for use on hair is often poorly sifted, and often has additives such as indigo or other herbs meant to condition hair. These only serve to dilute the dye and diminish color when used for body art. They should be avoided. Most importantly any henna that claims to give a black stain is certainly adulterated with undesirable chemicals, very likely the dangerous p-Phenylenediamine, or PPD. It is extremely important to avoid these products! Once you’ve chosen some high quality henna we are ready to take the next step, adding a liquid.

    Liquid-

    The liquid used to wet the henna and form a paste must be either neutral or mildly acidic. This will allow for dye release. We will discuss this in greater detail later. For now what we need to know is that the final mix must be at lest a little bit on the acidic side. Paste with a pH of 5.5 will release dye and stay stable for a 1-3 days after that at room temperature. It will keep longer if refrigerated, and months if frozen. The more acidic, the longer it takes for the plant matter to release dye so that its available to bind to skin, but the paste will also stay stable longer. The less acidic the liquid, the less standing time it needs to release the dye, but the paste will also have a shorter shelf life. There are many safe household liquids to choose from, each with their own pros and cons. Many people use lemon juice in their mix for a more stable paste. The concern with lemon juice is that some people are sensitive to citrus and may experience itching and redness from contact with the juice. Some people use water for the sake of simplicity, safety, and speed of preparation. Tap water in many areas may have an unusably high pH, or may contain minerals that are not helpful to the process. Distilled water is best for this purpose. Henna mixed with water may not have as long of a shelf life, especially when exposed to heat. Another option is tea or coffee. It is important to note that caffeine is absorbed through the skin! People not used to caffeine may even be able to notice the small amount that gets into their bloodstream when used in paste. Also, it is inadvisable to add these liquids to paste when still hot, as heat can rush the process and kill paste as quickly as it becomes ready to use. Another liquid that has been gaining popularity is apple juice. Apple juice is mildly acidic, and not a citrus juice giving us the best of both worlds. Remember though, when mixing with apple juice that it does contain quite a bit of sugar already, so adding less to the recipe may be a good idea. We will talk more about sugar in a bit.

    Solvent-

    When you hear the word “solvent” you probably tend to think of things like turpentine or gasoline, and you would be correct. In fact such caustic substances are often found in commercially sold premixes, and this is one of the biggest reasons to avoid them! A solvent in henna paste helps to dilute the dye, lawsone, in our paste. Lawsone is hydrophobic, which means that it doesn’t mix well with water. Like vegetable oil, for example, they repel each other. We want to use a solvent to help it dissolve better into the paste, disperse evenly, and make the dye molecules more available to bind to skin. Of course, unlike those premixes, we want to do it safely. Skin safe essential oils high in monoterpene alcohols do the job. The most common suitable oils for this job are cajeput, lavender, niaouli, tea tree, and eucalyptus globulus. You can learn much more about the specific chemical constituents we are looking for in essential oils, judging their quality, and how to safely experiment with using new and varied oils in your paste here. To start, using one of or a blend of these five at about 1-2 tablespoons per 100 grams of henna powder. Some people leave the paste to stand for some hours, then add oils, then leave it stand again. This is fine with a paste mixed with an acidic liquid, but with water mixes adding the essential oil right from the start appears to help increase the longevity and stability of the paste. On the other hand there is no clear advantage for letting paste stand before adding the essential oil.

    Sugar-

    Henna leaves do have some amount of sugar already. The more sugar the stringier the paste. In most climates though, it is necessary to add additional sugar to henna paste to help it stick better to skin, avoid cracking and crumbling, and to help it stay flexible when dry. Henna also absorbs more readily into skin while its moist. Adding sugar helps prevent it from drying too quickly. There are many forms of sugar we can add, and they break down into two categories. The first is monosaccharides and disaccharides, and include fructose, glucose, dextrose. These are the most common sugars to add to henna paste. They can be found in varying combinations in table sugar, sugar substitutes, honey, molasses, and the like. These are the sugars help keep paste from drying too quickly, prevent cracking and lifting, and help keep the dry paste flexible. Personally I find liquid forms of sugar such as honey, to be unpredictable in how they sometimes change the texture of paste significantly with freezing and thawing, but I also know many amazing henna artists who use them to great success. Choosing sugar is a matter of trial and error, and what works best for you personally. The second type of sugar is polysaccharides. These are very long chains of sugars and they can give creamy paste that egg white-like texture in naturally stringy paste. They are, however, pretty hard to use. The easiest way to add them is in the form of pectin or xanthan gum. I find it best to wet these two before adding to paste. Additionally one can boil okra or chia seeds and strain the gooey runoff and add that to paste. These methods are generally seen as way to much effort for the result. If you prefer a stringy paste, you are far better off buying a naturally stringy henna.

    Having chosen your sugar, the next step is how to add it and how much to add. Like in baking, sugar should be considered a “wet ingredient” even when you’re using dry forms such as table sugar. This is because sugar draws in moisture out of the air which will thin your paste just like adding more liquid! This also means that depending on the humidity in the environment where you will be using the henna, you may need to add more or less sugar. Dry climates will require far more sugar than humid climates. If you live in an area where the humidity varies by the day or hour, you may be better off using a standard measurement in your recipe. I find that two tablespoons per 100 grams of henna powder is usually just about right if you add it to very thick paste, then let it stand for 10-20 minutes to absorb moisture from the air. You will notice that the paste is wetter than it was. If this does not bring it to your normal working consistency, then you can add more liquid until its right. DO NOT add sugar to paste that is already thin enough to use or the sugar will make it thinner yet, and you can wind up with a sloppy mess.     Once you understand all of these key ingredients and what they do for your paste, you are much more prepared to make changes to your recipe and predict the results. You may find that changing the texture of your paste improves your work greatly! Good solid stain is of course key to successful henna. Now that you know how to mix good, dark staining paste, lets find out how it works.

    Part Two: Dying Skin

    This is where things start to get a little more complex, but if you bear with it I’m sure you’ll find it worth your while.

    Dye Release

    The first part of this process is dye release. It takes place in the paste when we mix it. Adding liquid to powdered henna leaf starts to break down the the tiny bits of plant matter to let the dye molecule be free. Specifically the dye is attached to a sugar molecule called a glycoside. There are two different processes that can sever that link, both of which are probably happening in paste during its standing time. One is enzymatic hydrolysis which is a quick process. Enzymes naturally occurring in the plant can begin to break down the glycosides. This is why crushing fresh henna leaves in your fingers can produce a stain immediately. Acidic hydrolysis is slower and more productive in dried plant material. This process CANNOT take place in an base. Henna leaves are mildly acidic on their own, so using water as your liquid still produces an adequately acidic environment. As the dye is released in this way, it will then begin to demise, which is to say it loses its dye potential.

    We’ve talked about how acids slow the process, but it may also be helpful to point out that as in any chemical reaction heat will speed it up. This is why many people apply heat to their paste while standing. I am personally of the opinion that except for in an emergency it is better to let the process take its course at room temperature, only because its too easy to make a mistake. If you let it get too hot you will “cook” you paste and it will speed right past dye release and on to demise before you even have a chance to use it, just like is possible when adding a hot liquid to your henna powder.

    Chemistry of hennaMeet the Molecule

    This is a good time to get a look at the lawsone molecule. This is the heart of the chemistry of henna. The lawsone molecule, once released from the sugar portion of the glycoside, can then be observed in three forms as seen here. The first stage is the reduced form of lawsone, labeled THN. It is clear, and you will notice that it has some hydrogen atoms in its structure that are not in the next form. That one is pale yellow, and is the useful form in which it is able to attach to skin. The third form is the oxidized form and is has the well known red/brown color.

    In this third, oxidized form, the lawsone molecule can no longer bind to keratin in skin. If you’ve ever seen that bit of brown goo that separates from your paste and forms a layer on the surface, that is oxidized lawsone. You may also have noticed that if you can separate that from the rest of the paste and apply it to skin, it does precisely nothing! You also may notice that water mixes look a little more brown. That is because more of the dye molecules are advancing in the process and have reached the yellow or red/brown state. Acidic mixes help slow oxidation of the lawsone molecule. That is to say that it preserves those hydrogen atoms at the edges. This both slows dye release, and slows demise of the paste. This slowing down of the process helps us hit a moment that has the most possible available dye that has been released but has not oxidized.

    You can observe the lack of oxidation by noting that acidic mixes stay greener much longer. The trick is to get henna paste into contact with skin while in the middle, pale yellow stage which is when it can best bind to keratin in the skin. This happens after some exposure to the paste and we see the results in the yellow/orange stain when the paste is first removed from skin! Interestingly this bond is permanent, even though the stain is not. We’ll learn why in the third section.

    Part Three: Oxidation

    We have already discussed oxidation in the previous section, but until now we wanted to avoid it as much as possible. Now that the lawsone is bound to the keratin in the skin we want oxidation to happen. Remember oxidation is the process by which that last hydrogen atom pops off and changes the color of the dye making it the deep dark color we love. Exposure to air enables this process, which is the very same process by which an apple browns or a car rusts! So, when the paste is removed, it is exposed to air and begins to darken as the lawsone molecule changes shape one more time, losing one more hydrogen atom, this time becoming the third form pictured, with the red/brown color.     You may be wondering now about the use of after care balms. Don’t they prevent exposure to air? Don’t they often contain oils with antioxidants? Why yes! And for this reason I tend not to recommend using them until the stain has matured except maybe a light application while bathing. Oxidation is more complex than simple exposure to air though. Other things in the environment will encourage it, and an application of antioxidant oils won’t prevent it, but in cases where quick development of stain is key, such as for brides, I’d hesitate to over emphasize the use of balms in case it would slow the color change.

    Part Four: Demise of the Stain

    So now we have finally, fully covered the creation of a mature henna stain, we can tackle the rest of its life span quite quickly. As I mentioned above, the lawsone binds to keratin permanently. This is why henna stain on finger nails has to grow out rather than fading. On skin, you may remember from your middle school science class that the surface of your skin is actually dead cells, and as they exfoliate, they are renewed by new fresh cells from beneath. Depending on the individual and the thickness of the skin this cycle takes roughly two weeks. The cells with lawsone permanently attached to them are not permanent themselves and eventually exfoliate away. This is why the average life span of a henna design is about two weeks. It will last longer on palms where the skin is thicker and the process takes longer. The opposite is true on thin skin such as on the face. At this point in the process, balms are much more helpful as they can protect the design from soaps and other chemicals that might fade the design, and slow exfoliation as well.

    Final Thoughts on the Chemistry of Henna

    Many people wonder why the color is darker on hands and feet than arms and legs, and darker on arms and legs then on the face and tours. The reason has again, like with longevity of the stain, has to do with the thickness of the skin. Lawsone is a translucent dye, and skin is somewhat translucent as well. On places where skin is thicker you are seeing more layers of dye giving a deeper color. Other people may also worry that henna wont show on people with darker skin tone. It certainly does! Again, because the dye is translucent, it adds to the pigment in skin. However dark the natural skin tone, henna will make it darker. Often dark skinned people get rich deep shades of mahogany and even near black on palms. Henna looks great on all kinds of people!

    Essential Oils In Henna Paste

    What is an essential oil?

    An essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. They are often referred to as essence or oil of a specific plant, such as essence of lavender, or clove oil. Essential oils, like all organic compounds, are made up of hydrocarbon molecules and can further be classified as terpenes, alcohols, esters, aldehydes, ketones and phenols etc. (As henna artists we are most interested in specific terpenes called monoterpene alcohols, but we’ll get back to that a little later.) In plants these chemicals are naturally created as means of communication with other plants, to attract species that are helpful, and to repel those that are harmful. The also play varied rolls in plant metabolism. Its just by chance that humans are able to take advantage of them for medicinal purposes, as scents and flavorings, and to use essential oils in henna paste to give it a boost.

    Essential oils are made from the plant parts in three basic ways. (There are variations on each of these three methods. For more in depth information please see the resource list below.) Steam distillation is the most common method as its simple and cost effective. Heat is applied to the plant matter until the volatile liquid in the plant are vaporized, then condensed back into a liquid. Expression is a method reserved for citrus oils. With citrus fruits the essential oils are concentrated in little pockets between the skin and the fruit. The skins are pressed to release this oil, it and any juice are caught, and the juice is separated from the oil with a centrifuge. The last method, solvent extraction, is costly but necessary where some plants with very delicate oils would be damaged by steam distillation, such as with jasmine, rose, and some others. CO2 extraction produces the highest quality of oils produced this way, and will not have traces of solvents as some of the other solvent extraction methods may. Realistically though, for most people any oils produced by extraction will be far to expensive to use in henna paste.

    Its also important to note here what essential oils are NOT. Using a fragrance oil, or an essential oil diluted for aromatherapy or massage purposes will not improve henna stains one bit! Fragrance oils are man made, synthesized chemicals made just to smell like something. They do not have all the fine complexities of real essential oils. Often the part of an essential oil useful in improving henna stain doesn’t play much of a roll in the overall scent and wouldn’t be a part of the man-made counterpart. Also many fragrance oils contain phthalates or other chemicals that health conscious people may want to avoid. Another category of oils that are not helpful to henna artists are oils diluted for aromatherapy use. Most oils (with some exceptions like tea tree or lavender) are not recommend for “neat,” or direct undiluted use on the skin because they are too strong when used that way. Often oils intended for aromatherapy will be sold already diluted by a fixed oil such as grape seed oil or sweet almond oil. These oils will not be concentrated enough to work on paste. Pure oils added to paste are effectively diluted by the other ingredients in the mix so that they are still mild enough for use on skin.

    How do essential oils help improve stain?

    Essential oils dissolve lawsone molecules into a an evenly dispersed solution. Think of adding salt to water, and how once dissolved, each sip or drop of water will have the same amount of salt. Not only that, but in solutions materials have a more loose chemical structure that will make the lawsone more available to attach to skin. Lawsone, however is not water soluble so juice, tea, or water will not get the job done. It can be dissolved in things like kerosene or turpentine, but those ingredients would be horrible for our uses! These are dangerous chemicals! Henna artists need to use essential oils in henna that is skin safe and healthy for humans that will also dissolve the lawsone. Of all the hundreds, and hundreds of possible chemical constituents naturally present in essential oils, monoterpene alcohols are some of the most useful. They tend to be mild, nontoxic, effective against microorganisms, and have a tonifying effect. This means that they are often used in skin care and hygiene. As luck would have it they are also effective solvents for our purposes! Adding one to two tablespoons (15-30 ml) of essential oils high in monoterpene alcohols per 100 g of henna powder will dissolve lawsone in paste and greatly increase its ability to absorb into skin and bind to proteins there.

    There are some traditional uses of oils that are non-helpful wive’s tales. Applying oils to the skin before applying henna designs is not effective at all. In fact using essential oils “neat” or un-diluted directly on skin can be very irritating and using oils cut with fixed oils can seal skin away from the paste, blocking absorption of the lawesone dye. Applying essential oils after the paste is removed is also not helpful. It may be useful, however, to  use olive oil or other cooking oil to help loosen paste and remove residue rather than washing with water, and it may be helpful to apply oily products like lotion, lip or body balms, or even olive oil to skin before showing or bathing to seal the skin away from water and to help discourage exfoliation.

    Which essential oils are safe and effective?

    Common monoterpene alcohols include carvacrol, linalool, citronellol, geraniol, alpha-terpinol and terpinol-4, thymol, menthol, cineol, eugenol. Some of these can be irritating to skin when the are heavily present in an essential oil though! Of these those that are non irritating and and effective are lilalool, both terpinols, geraniol, ceneol, and cedrol. Tea tree has cineol. Cajeput and Niaouli both have high levels of cineol and terpineol. Geranium has geraniol and linalol. Clove bud has high levels of eugenol.

    There’s more to it than just identifying these chemical constituents. Just because an oil contains the good monoterpene alcohols, doesn’t make it a good oil for paste! Camphor, for example, is full of cineol and terpineol, BUT its also toxic because of other chemicals naturally present in the oil. Also, plants with similar names are NOT equal. Clove bud makes a perfectly fine paste enhancing essential oil (although can be irritating to some, so use it in small amounts) but clove leaf is a strong irritant! You should also know that sometimes essential oils are improperly labeled. Eucalyptus Globulus is a great “terp” (slang term for essential oils high in monoterpenes and  and skin safe for use in henna paste) but other varieties are not. Its common to find eucalyptus essential oil labeled “globulus” that turn out to be a different variety all together! Quality can be a serious issue too. Depending on how the oils are distilled, toxins involved in the extraction can be left behind. To complicate the issue even further many companies will use the term like “aromatherapy grade,” which are essentially meaningless. Some multi level marketing companies will supply their representatives with credentials that are without any value or authority to help them sell over priced, poor quality product. Be wary of this practice! One last thought on oil choices: Even the same species of plant can be different from one source to the next. Lavender is a perfect example. Even though they are all True Lavender, lavender from France (or fine lavender) has much lower levels of monoterpene alcohols that that grown in Hungary or Bulgaria. When shopping for essential oils for your henna paste it is really best to shop with a dedicated henna supplier. They know all these details including the ones that don’t effect other consumers.

    Please be careful and responsible when using essential oils in henna paste. Some oils can be dangerous for people with specific medical conditions. Lavender is very mild and a good choice for people who are pregnant, ill, or have very sensitive skin. Choosing good, safe, and effective essential oils for use in henna paste requires a lot of trust in a supplier, or a lot of independent research. Always be very careful in your choice and make sure that you clients are well aware of the ingredients in your paste.

  • Henna and Phytophotodermatitis

    What do henna and phytophotodermatitis have to do with each other? Have you ever heard of Margarita Burn? If so, that’s Phytophotodermatitis. Its the reason we shouldn’t use lime juice in our henna paste.

    Some botanical compounds can react with UV light, changing them them into something toxic to skin and creating burns. The intensity of burns varies depending on sensitivity, and the amount of exposure to both the plant matter and sunlight. The symptoms can range from slight itching and burning with a bruise like appearance or browning of the skin, to extreme discomfort and blisters. Symptoms usually don’t show until the day after exposure.

    Plants that can cause this reaction are:

    Parsley
    Parsnips
    Celery
    Carrot
    Fig
    Lime
    Several species of wild flowers (umbelliferae).

    Some sources will list citrus in general, but after much searching I found actual reports of citrus burns to be almost exclusively lime, with the occasional grapefruit report. The photo below is burns caused by lime juice.

    Many professional artists concerned about this issue or general citrus allergies have chosen to reduce the amount of lemon in their paste or move to non-lemon mixes. Personally, I’ve been using just a small amount of lemon diluted in water. It is, however, very clear that we should never use lime or grapefruit juice for henna paste!
